How'd We Get Here?
The unending flurry of news from south of the border has left a lot of Canadians feeling angry, anxious and powerless.
For as long as anyone living can remember, Canada and the US have been the best of friends. Constantly sharing, helping each other in times of need, working together for common cause, and occasionally getting really competitive over sports; we’ve always felt like family, even at the worst of times.
It feels like all that changed in an instant. Suddenly we’re being insulted, belittled and our borders are being threatened. It’s enough to make your head spin.
But Canadians have responded. We were raised on the only sport where the rules of the game are enforced not just by the refs, but by the players themselves. In hockey, when someone steps out of line, sometimes you have to help them find it again. Maybe at the end of an elbow.
From the moment Mike Myers yelled “Elbows Up Canada” on SNL, it became the rallying cry of Canadians.
About the Creators
Dreamt up in Grafton, ON and brought to life in Toronto, we wanted to create a logo that would capture that rallying cry and speak to the common thread that unites all Canadians from coast to coast to coast.
We purposefully wanted to design something without the aid of generative AI. While capturing the moment was important, it was critical for us to come from a place of authenticity, and create something we could feel proud of.
The Elbows Up Logo was created by Canadians for Canadians by designer Brent Anderson and web developer Andrew Heins with the generous help of our friends and family.
Free for Canadians
Making it free for Canadians to share and use just makes sense. We want to see this symbol in shop windows and on protest signs, printed on paper and hung at your desk.
The tariffs are going to cause tough times for Canadians, and that shouldn’t stop you from showing your pride. We want a universally recognizable symbol of Canadian truculence and determination that’s free for Canadians to use and share.
If you’ve got the means, we also have a 100% designed, manufactured and printed in Canada shirt you can rep to show your pride, but don’t let that stop you from putting your Elbows Up.
Our deepest thanks to Mike Myers for helping Canadians find our voice and rallying cry.
